Developing Children's Understanding of Number: Practical activities and ideas to support the development of subitising through provision
From a very young age, and before they can even count them, children begin to recognise amounts and the difference between numbers of objects. Now highlighted within the revised EYFS, “subitising” helps children develop secure number sense and their ability to ‘visualise’ numbers on their journey to becoming a confident and skilful mathematician!
In this session we will explore some of the ideas and theory behind subitising. We will then consider strategies, games and practical ideas to support this mathematical skill in your classroom.
Benefits:
A clear understanding of subitising and how it supports children’s mathematical development
Practical examples of ways to support the development of subitising through continuous and enhanced provision, as well as adult led activities
An exploration of the progression of subitising across the EYFS
All EYFS practitioners
