How to Teach Understanding the World in the EYFS
Does your EYFS practice reflect the ways that young children learn best? Is your teaching of Understanding the World meaningful and based on rich, well-planned experiences? Do adults engage effectively with children’s interest in the world around them?
This series of three webinars will explore how young children learn best through an effective balance of first- hand experiences, taught concepts and skills and through engaging interactions. Join us to discover how Understanding the World needs to be carefully planned across the year with rich, seasonal experiences and opportunities to nurture and challenge children’s thinking.
Part 1: Learning About the World Around Them
In this first session, explore key research around how young children build their understanding of the world around them. Consider the development of thinking skills and how children’s understanding of the world progresses from the domestic to the local area and then further afield.
Part 2: Rich Experiences
Explore how rich, well-planned experiences are at the heart of effective practice, with a focus on planning for experiences within continuous provision and time to reflect on the importance of visits and visitors to inspire young learners.
Part 3: The Adult Role
Finally, the focus will be on the role of the adult in engaging with, and responding to, children’s experiences. Explore key strategies for effective interactions alongside the planning for learning cycle.
