Developing Quality Teaching and Learning in Reception

Placing the Reception Year in the Spotlight

Description

This course spotlights YR supporting you to establish strong practice and consider what effective teaching looks like in the Reception year. Building on ‘Let’s Explore Effective Teaching in the EYFS’, this new course offers a clear understanding of child development at 4-5 years old, supports the design of a cohesive, child-centred curriculum and makes sense of assessment and progression.

With golden threads running through highlighting the adult role, Specific Areas of Learning, PSED and language development, you will leave with greater confidence to shape practice that is responsive, ambitious and rooted in how children learn best.

Join us for this course which is either offered as a full day course or as a programme of three webinars and will cover:

Understanding Child Development in the Reception Year

Unpack the key developmental progression for 4-5 year olds. Understand how cognitive, physical and social-emotional development at this stage influences how children engage with the curriculum and build the foundations for learning.

Creating a Cohesive and Child-Centred Reception Curriculum

Explore how to design a rich, balanced Reception experience that draws on both adult-led and child-initiated learning. Consider how the Prime and Specific Areas work together to support a curriculum that is responsive, developmentally appropriate and rooted in purposeful play.

Making Sense of Assessment and Progression in the Reception Year

Reflect on how assessment underpins a responsive, well-sequenced curriculum in Reception. Learn to use observation, baseline information and everyday interactions to identify starting points, track progress and shape next steps. Review how to meaningfully capture children’s learning journeys and support effective transitions into Reception and on to Year 1.

Benefits:

  • Deepen understanding of effective teaching to deliver the curriculum whilst meeting the developmental needs of Reception aged children

  • Build confidence in pedagogy and routines underpinned by research and principles to enable Reception children to develop foundational skills and knowledge

  • Gain practical strategies, ideas and advice to support teaching, learning and progression in the Reception Year
