Rethinking Outdoor Learning in KS1

Designed for KS1 leaders and teachers focusing on how to plan effectively for outdoor learning

Description

This specialist KS1 course, designed to support leaders and teachers in Y1 & 2, will focus on planning and creating an effective and challenging outdoor learning environment that complements and supports the KS1 curriculum.

Join us for this course which is either offered as a full day course or as a programme of three 90 minute webinars to deepen knowledge and gain inspiration and ideas to improve practice and provision outdoors for KS1 learners.

Key Principles: Recognising the Importance of Outdoor Learning

Firstly, we will explore the key principles of child development and recognise the importance in understanding how children learn best outside in KS1.

Rethink the Provision: Exploring Continuous Provision Outside

We will revisit the key principles of effective continuous provision, considering how the outdoor environment and its use needs careful planning and preparation so that it is inspiring, engaging and challenging – and successfully meet the needs of the curriculum.

Linking Provision to the Curriculum

Finally, we consider a range of strategies that can be employed to successfully embed the use of the outdoors in children’s learning throughout KS1. We look closely at the links between continuous provision and the KS1 curriculum, ensuring it offers rich opportunities to acquire and practice skills, extending and challenging transferable skills, such as communication and problem solving, as well as promoting thinking skills.

Benefits:

  • Develop a clear understanding of the value of outdoor learning in relation to the key principles of child development

  • Consider a wealth of practical ideas to embrace outdoor learning, complementing and supporting the KS1 curriculum

  • Deepen your knowledge of how critical skills can be effectively embedded and extended through careful planning and preparation of the learning environment
